Sports!! a new Spice for Bollywood
Ekta khangawal
Film
has a uniquely powerful ubiquity within human culture. The collective
nature of the narrative and visual stimulation makes the experience enjoyable
and when the films are based on sports, the
experience becomes more enjoyable as well stimulating. Sports are rule-governed contests of physical skill in which humans
compete against one another. In the sports film such athletic contests play a
central role in defining the main characters.
Though
India is the largest film making country but in the history of 100 years we can
hardly find films based on sports or sportsperson. But recently a new trend of
sports based films could be seen. Chak de India, Pan Singh Tomar and now Bhag
Milkha Bhag are the reflection of new
trend of Bollywood. A Sport Film revolves around
a sport setting, event, or an athlete. Often, these films will center on a
single sporting event that carries significant importance. These films put an
emphasis on the large events in the subject’s life and chronicle the fame and
glory that accompany sports. Chak De!
India explores religious bigotry,
the legacy of the partition of India, ethnic and regional prejudice, and sexism in contemporary
India through field hockey. Production for the film began after Jaideep Sahni decided
to write a fictional screenplay based on the winning of the Gold by the Indian
women's field hockey team at the 2002 Commonwealth
Games .
Although some media outlets compared Kabir Khan to real-life hockey player Mir
Ranjan Negi. Paan Singh Tomar is an
Indian biographical, sports film based on the true story of an athlete Paan Singh Tomar
employed by the Indian Army and who won a gold
medal at Indian National Games, but was forced to become a notorious bandit.
Nagesh Kukunoor
directed Iqbal tells the story of Iqbal,a deaf and
mute boy, who dreams of playing cricket for India. The local drunkard, Mohit (Naseeruddin Shah), who was once a great cricketer, helped Iqbal to
achieve his dreams.
Bhag
Milkha Bhag is a Bio-pic of celebrated Indian sprinter Milkha Singh's roller-coaster
life. The film, starring Farhan Akhtar as
Milkha, details the athlete's journey from a boy displaced during Partition to
his early years in a gang of petty thieves, followed by his recruitment in the
Indian army from where he went on to become a sports hero. The Bio-pic
of Milkha Singh has created new enthusiasm for sports in youngsters and they
got to know about India’s first ever Gold won by The Flying Sikh in 1958
Cardiff Commonwealth Games.
The Sports Bio-Pic
dramatizes the life of a historically important athlete or an important sports
team. The Sports Bio-Pic often stretches the truth for dramatic effect and the
accuracy is often questioned. To look like as Milkha
Singh, Farhan Akhtar had undergone tough physical training. Farhan Akhtar's sincere performance. is the film's
biggest strength. From his convincing accent and his dialogue delivery to the
sheer best of his physical presence, Farhan is riveting as Milkha. Similarly
leading actress Priyanka Chopra is also undergoing tough Boxing training as she
is playing the character in Bio-pic of five time world boxing champion Mary
kom. These kinds of Bio-pics depict the achievements and struggle of champions
and also create new role models for younger generation. The inclusion of sports should be done with greater responsibility so
that these films could help in
generating sports culture in country.
