Vijay Anand
After scoring 2 goals against Cardiff, Luis
Suarez took his tally of goals scored in a month to 10. It is a new British
record of scoring maximum no. of goals in a calendar month. Suarez can extend
the tally as 2 more crucial games are waiting for him in the month of December.
Full name of Luis Suarez is Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz. He was born in Uruguan town of Salto on 24th January 1987. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall. At the age of 11, he left his hometown and moved to Montevideo and joined champion club, Nacional.
His journey progressed from then on. He learnt skill and techniques in native country while playing for Nacional. In 2006, Dutch club showed interest in him and paid € 8,00,000 for his purchase. He stayed there and emerged as a star in the making. After making a niche for him, Dutch giants Ajax signed his contract in 2007. Ajax paid €7.5 million for the stricker.
Suarez enjoyed playing for the capital club. He repaid the amount and love to the fans. His prime for the club was the year 2009-10. In it, he scored 49 goals in 48 games. In total, he netted 74 goals in 97 games for the Amsterdam club. With such a high goal scoring rate per game, he was duly hailed as god by fans.
He drew negative attention in an Eredivisie game in November 2010. He bit Otman Bakkal of PSV on the shoulder in a fit of rage. He was handed a 7 game ban for the act and labeled as ‘cannibal’ by the press.
Well, despite of this, his football prowess continued to impress soccer lovers around the world. In January 2010 via transfer window, he moved to Liverpool. Though Liverpool continued to fail in getting seat in UEFA Champions League but he stayed with the Red club. Recently he extended his contract up to 2018. No doubt, after so many years, the Reds are ambitious of EPL title and Suarez is a major force behind it.
In 2012 season he scored 23 goals in total for the club. Controversy touched him again when in the same season; he was banned for 8 games for using racist language against Patrice Evra.
All the dust around him has now settled. This year he has emerged in more mature and disciplined avatar. His most positive moment this year is his 4 goals against Norwich in a single game at home. His superb display with injured arm at White Hart Lane cost AVB his chair. In current season so far in 12 games so far, he has scored 19 goals, provided 5 assists and taken 77 shots. He is fearsome and only Diego Costa of Athletico Madrid can match his brilliance this season.
He is an important member of National side. He drew enough light by his hand of god act against Ghana in QF of World Cup. The match was tied at 1-1 and in 121st minute of the match, he handed a goal bounded shot. Referee Olegario Benquerenca of Portugal flashed the red card immediately. Asamoah Gyan took and missed the penalty off the crossbar. He danced on the sidelines and later quoted that now ‘Hand of God’ belongs to him.
His curling long range match winner against Korea was one of the best goal of the tournament. Forlan stole all the show but Suarez played his part in the SF campaign of the squad in WC.
He was adjudged Copa America player of the tournament on course of winning the title in 2011. He added more feathers to his cap by scoring 11 goals in recent Latin American World Cup qualifier. He was the top scorer, ahead of talented trio of Messi-Higuain and Falcao. He is playing for National team since 2007 and has scored 39 times in 71 matches so far. His 4 goals (all field goals) in game against Chile was his best show in the Qualifiers.
He has speed and creativity. His diving is perfect. His vision, shooting, dribbling, ball control and handling fear factor is superb. But his header and tackling are weak. His previous coaches have admitted that he is not a good free kick taker. Off late, he is shedding the jinx and has scored 5 goals from free kicks this year. Game against Zenit Saint Petersburg and Wigan Athletic are a testimony to it. He is quite fearsome from long range and fans are not missing Gerard.
Suarez is more skillfull and disciplined now. Hope of Uruguay and Liverpool rest on him. Both are in good shape and looking to regain lost glory. Luis is fit and his star is on the rise. If Suarez remains in this form up to July next year, they certainly can quench the long thirst.
